Nursing: Moving Forward

Nurses are being asked to work harder for less pay, while being responsible for everything. How do nurses respond?

Short cuts and bullying have become pervasive. Meanwhile, nurse supervisors and hospital managers also struggle to keep up with their job demands.

I traveled throughout the United States and across the globe talking to nurses about these issues, and offers some ideas for how the nursing profession can improve and thrive.

My book focuses on a few major themes that best exemplify the problem of unrealistic expectations made of nurses:

  • Caring and professionalism
  • Bullying as a control method
  • Smarts ie nursing knowledge
  • Errors and Just Culture

I then apply the lessons learned from my visits to 25 nursing boards in the US and visits to nursing leaders in about 25 countries.

The final chapter lays out my recommendations for fixing these problems.
